The Power of a Financial Advisor

What is a Financial Plan?

A financial plan is designed to help you reach both your short and long term goals. It is not just about your investments or your budget, but your entire ever-evolving life. A financial plan means looking at the full picture instead of treating everything separately. Your investments, retirement plan, and estate plan should all be working together, not as separate pieces. The way your money is invested should align with your timeline and goals. Your retirement plan should factor in your income needs, taxes, and lifestyle. Your estate plan should make sure everything is handled the way you intend in case anything were to happen (and that’s a lot to think about!). It also for navigating real life as it happens. Whether it’s starting a new job, getting married, dealing with student debt, having kids, going through a loss, your plan adjusts with you so you are not making life altering decisions on your own.

A financial plan is NOT just a document that is handed to you one and done, it is something that needs TLC, and to continuously grow with you over time. It is also not something that is dictated to you or feels one-sided. A good financial plan should never feel forced or overwhelming. It is developed with you, not for you. You and your advisor work together to talk through your aspirations and fears, discuss tradeoffs, review the details, and adjust things as needed.

At the end of the day, a financial plan is a personalized, evolving roadmap with clear next steps that help you stay on track and move toward your future with confidence.

Why do I need an Advisor?

You can absolutely do it yourself, a lot of people do. The real question isn’t can you, it’s whether you want to spend the time, energy, and responsibility that comes with doing it well.

Working with a financial advisor is similar to a lot of other things in life that are technically “doable” on your own. Consider having a big yard and a garden, sure, you can mow and plant and weed yourself, no problem. But if you really want it to look good, suddenly you’re spending your weekends maintaining equipment, figuring out what to do, and keeping everything in shape. Over time, that adds up, not just in hours, but in stress. Or think about painting or renovating your home. Could you do it yourself? Probably. But it’s going to take a lot of time, a lot of trial and error, and if something goes wrong, it can be expensive to fix. Most people choose to hire a professional because they want it done right the first time, with consistent work and a good end result.

Your finances are kind of the same way. Budgeting, investing, taxes, insurance, retirement planning. None of it is impossible to figure out on your own, but it does take time, consistency, and a lot of knowledge to do it right. And the stakes are a lot higher than a lawn or a home renovation. A financial advisor helps take that weight off your plate. More importantly, they help you make decisions with a clear plan instead of guessing, Googling, or taking advice from friends who may not be in the same situation as you. It’s similar to how you wouldn’t ignore a warning light in your car or skip important health checkups, you go to professionals because you want things done right.

And honestly, money is such a sensitive and important part of everyone’s life. It impacts your future, your family, your stress levels, everything. Because of that, it’s something you want to make sure you’re handling the right way, not just guessing your way through. You wouldn’t take chances when it comes to your health, you go to the doctor, you get checkups, you ask questions. Your finances deserve that same level of attention and care, if not more. We’re not just here to manage your portfolio (although that’s obviously a big part of what we do). We’re also here to support you through all the life moments that come with it. Money is emotional, and big financial decisions often come with stress, uncertainty, or major life changes. Having someone in your corner to talk things through, keep you grounded, and help you make confident decisions can make all the difference.

At the end of the day, it’s about having someone in your corner who knows what they’re doing, keeps you accountable, and helps you stay on track toward your goals. You’re not just paying for someone to “manage money” — you’re investing in a plan, guidance, and peace of mind.

The Importance of Starting Young

When it comes to investing, it is crucial to understand the power of compound interest. Many young people feel like they cannot invest or do not have enough money to start, which is understandable. The reality is that starting early, even with small contributions, can lead to significantly more money by retirement than waiting and contributing larger amounts later in life. This happens because of the snowball effect, where your money continues to grow on itself over time. In the long run, this makes a great difference, especially when planning for retirement.

For Example:

Let’s say Amy wants to start young and get ahead. She gets a job shortly after college and is able to begin investing at 25, putting away $500 a month. She does this for 10 years until she’s 35, and then stops contributing completely, just letting her money grow at a 6% return.

By the time she reaches 65, Amy ends up with about $493,000. Her total contributions equaling $60,000.

Now look at Joey. He gets a later start and doesn’t really think about retirement until he turns 40. At that point, he decides to start putting away the same $500 a month and stays consistent all the way until 65, also earning a 6% return.

By the time he’s done, Joey ends up with about $347,000. His total contributions equaling $150,000.

So even though Amy only invested for 10 years and Joey invested for 25 years, she still ends up with about $150,000 more. The biggest difference? She started earlier!! This really shows how powerful time is when it comes to investing.
